Diamonds That Fall from the Treetop

Press Release & Gallery

Diamonds That Fall from the Treetop is a solo exhibition by interdisciplinary artist Robert Hodge, commemorating two decades of a practice deeply rooted in African American history, cultural memory, and lived experience.

Working within the tradition of “sampling culture,” Hodge bridges temporal and cultural divides—melding the past and present through collage-based works that are cut, sewn, scorched, and painted. In doing so, Hodge creates living archives—acts of cultural preservation that elevate both celebrated and marginalized figures within the African American experience.

Guided by a deep commitment to the belief that Black history is inseparable from American history, Hodge’s practice spans collage, painting, and immersive installation. Viewers are invited to navigate the “layer cake” of African American history—uncovering hidden strata while envisioning new futures shaped by truth, complexity, and collective joy.

Diamonds That Fall from the Treetop is both a retrospective celebration and a forward-looking proposition—a call to recognize the brilliance embedded in discarded materials, forgotten stories, and the transformative potential of art to reclaim and reimagine our shared cultural landscape. The exhibition will be on view from June 14th to August 16th, 2025.
